About Cert Foundation in Arts and Humanities (CertHE)
The Foundation in Arts and Humanities (CertHE) is a one-year introductory course that is designed to prepare students for an undergraduate degree.
You do not need to have any prior qualifications to apply and if you complete the course satisfactorily you can progress to a degree in an arts and humanities subject at Bristol (although we cannot guarantee your first choice of degree).
See a list of all Foundation in Arts and Humanities (CertHE) degrees at Bristol, and find more information about the course, assessment and career prospects.
Throughout the course you will be introduced to a range of study skills that are essential for studying the arts and humanities at undergraduate level.
You will also receive a broad introduction to each of the subjects covered by the course and how these have developed over time.
The units are as follows:
- An Introduction to Study in the Arts and Humanities (20 credits)
- What Does it Mean to Be Human? I: The Modern World (40 credits)
- What Does it Mean to Be Human? II: From Modern to Ancient (20 credits)
- Individual Project (20 credits)
Plus one of the following:
- Representations: (Re)-Making the World (20 credits)
- or a Post-Beginnings Language unit in French, German or Spanish (20 credits)
In order to progress to most language courses, including Classics, some proficiency in languages is required and you may need to take the language options within the programme before progressing to a degree. It is not possible to progress to a Music degree unless you already have Grade 8 Music Theory or Grade A in A-Level Music, or are able to complete one of these in parallel with the Foundation in Arts and Humanities.Find out more about the course structure and units available for Foundation in Arts and Humanities (CertHE)
