Overview

Our goal is to train you to become an innovator and research leader in responsible, data-driven, and knowledge-intensive human-in-the-loop AI systems. Our innovative, cohort-based training programme will deliver cohorts of highly trained PhD graduates with the skills to design and implement complex interactive AI pipelines that solve important societal problems in responsible ways.

The key AI challenges of tomorrow are posed by the need for interactive knowledge-intensive systems in which the human plays an essential role.

In close conversation with our industry partners, the University identified interactive artificial intelligence as a core discipline of AI where the need for and deficit in advanced AI skills is abundantly evident, while being homogeneous enough to have intellectual integrity and be taught and researched within the context of a single centre for doctoral training.

You will be trained by world-leading experts in knowledge-driven AI, data-driven AI and human-AI interaction and receive inter-disciplinary training in responsible AI. You will study and work in close collaboration with other members of your cohort, developing advanced AI pipelines within a bespoke software environment. After completing this unique four-year programme, graduates will be at the forefront of AI innovation in both research and deployable systems.

Programme structure

Throughout the degree, you will have access to world-leading experts and industrial engagement, providing you with the opportunity to learn about real-world challenges and how industry tackles them.

During the first year of the programme, you will undertake a range of units allowing you time to build knowledge and ignite your curiosity. In addition, there will be opportunities for transferable skills training.

Following this first year of structured units, you will progress to the research component of the programme. At this stage students will be able to perform their own research at an internationally publishable standard. They will also be able to document and communicate their findings to peers and expert practitioners in the field.

Entry requirements

An upper second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant subject.

The Interactive Artificial Intelligence CDT is primarily aimed at students with a first degree in engineering or science and with strong programming skills, but will also consider applicants with suitable skills acquired in employment.

Fees are subject to an annual review. For programmes that last longer than one year, please budget for up to an 8% increase in fees each year.

Funding for 2023/24

The Centre for Doctoral Training in Interactive Artificial Intelligence offers a number of Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) studentships to eligible applicants covering tuition fees, maintenance stipend (£20,500/year), and research travel expenses.

Studentship funding is pro-rata and dependent on student registration status, with annual funding renewal dependent on maintaining excellent academic progress. Full details of the terms and conditions can be found on the EPSRC/UKRI webpage.

Applications received from self-funded students, externally sponsored international students, and EU students are welcome and will be considered.

Career prospects

Interactive human-in-the-loop AI systems have extremely wide applicability: the industry sectors of our partners include AI hardware, banking and finance, cloud computing, consumer devices, cyber security, digital democracy, entertainment, geo-mapping, mission-critical solutions, online retail, social networks and sustainable energy.

Interactive AI doctoral graduates will be highly employable in these and many other industry sectors, as well as government bodies and NGOs all over the globe.
