Sutton Trust Summer School

The University of Bristol Sutton Trust Summer School offers students the opportunity to experience student life in one of the UK’s most exciting cities. Our students will experience one of eight different subject streams, designed to provide an insight into a range of undergraduate courses at the University.

Applications for this year's Summer School closed at 12pm on Thursday 7th March 2024 and unfortunately, we are unable to accept late applications.

The Sutton Trust summer school is a free programme which gives students the chance to immerse themselves at the University of Bristol for a week, with a variety of different subject streams for students to choose from.

The academic experience consists of lectures and seminars delivered by our world-leading academics, group work and independent study.

You will get to know undergraduate students who study the subject you are interested in and who will mentor you through the summer school. You will meet other students on your stream, participate in varied social activities and receive key information about applying to university.

Dates and Location

The Sutton Trust Summer School will be taking place from Tuesday 23 July to Friday 26 July 2024.
Sessions on Tuesday 23 July will take place online through virtual sessions.
Students will then be based on campus in our halls of residence from Wednesday 24 July until Friday 26 July 2024.

Guaranteed contextual offer

We are committed to attracting the very best students and hold Sutton Trust Summer School participants in high regard.

For most courses, successfully completing the Sutton Trust Summer School at the University of Bristol guarantees you an offer at the contextual level, providing that you meet the full entry requirements of the course applied for. Students undertaking the appropriate subjects but not predicted the contextual offer will usually be made an aspirational offer.

If the course holds interviews as part of the selection process, you will be guaranteed an interview (for example, Medicine or Dentistry). The interview will only be guaranteed if your predicted grades meet the contextual entry requirements and you meet the GCSE subject requirements.

Eligibility

Applicants must be in Year 12 in England or Wales, Year 13 in Northern Ireland, or S5 in Scotland. Applicants must also attend, and have always attended, a state-funded school or college (non-fee paying) in the UK.

We are looking for applicants who meet the criteria outlined on the Sutton Trust website. In general, the more of these you meet, the more likely you are to secure a place. In addition, you will also be more likely to gain a place if you:

  • attend an institution on our aspiring state school list;
  • have achieved at least five A or 6 grades at GCSE, or five A or B passes at National 5, and where applicable, have taken subjects relevant to the course you applied for. The subjects required for each summer school course at Bristol can be found on the Sutton Trust website;
  • meet the requirements to gain entry on to the equivalent undergraduate course – entry requirements for each course can be found using our online course finder

Priority will be given to applicants who are (or have been) looked after or in care.

We are dedicated to ensuring our summer school programmes are inclusive and welcoming to all. We welcome applications from students living with disabilities, learning difficulties and other health and mental health conditions.
