Year in industry funding

If you live in England or Wales, financial support is available for your placement year. You can borrow the reduced tuition fee for this year and an amount to go towards living costs.

Students from England or Wales

You should apply for funding as you have done before. State on your application that you will be taking a sandwich year and where you are living. Your funding provider will assess the application and decide on the funding to which you are entitled . Make sure you check the deadlines for when to apply for funding.

Students funded by Student Finance England

For 2024/25, the normal means-tested maintenance loan rates of between £4,767 and £10,227 will apply if:

  • your year in industry includes more than 10 weeks during the year when you are at university.

You can apply for a non-means tested maintenance loan of £3,098 if all the following apply:

  • you are an eligible student on a full-year sandwich course paid placement;
  • the total amount of full-time study during the year is less than 10 weeks;
  • you are not living at your parental home.

Students funded by Student Finance Wales

For 2024/25, the maximum maintenance support is £12,150 of which the maximum means-tested grant is £8,100. The balance of £12,150 can be taken as a loan. These rates will apply if:

  • your year in industry includes more than 10 weeks during the year when you are at university.

You can apply for the reduced-rate maintenance loan of £5,575 if all the following apply:

  • you are an eligible student on a full-year sandwich course paid placement
  • the total amount of full-time study during the year is less than 10 weeks
  • you are not living at your parental home.
