Your University login

When you complete online registration we will give you a login username and password.

If you forget your login details use the self-service reset your password tool.

Your email and computer account

Computer

An account will be set up for you after you have registered online.

Email

We send many University communications to your University email address. You need to check your email often (daily in term time). You can access your email using the portal MyBristol or through Gmail.

Your email address uses your user ID (ab12345@my.bristol.ac.uk), and you cannot change this. You can create a user-friendly email address for others to contact you on while you are a student.

Migration

During this academic year, the University will be migrating students from the Google service to Microsoft Office 365. This means that students will change to use Microsoft Outlook for mail and calendar rather than Gmail and Google calendar. Your email address will change at this time to the format ab12345@bristol.ac.uk

University portal - MyBristol

Use MyBristol as your point of access for information, services and resources, including:

  • University remote desktop
  • Blackboard, the University online learning environment
  • your timetable
  • your recent email
  • course details and tutor announcements
  • library services and your library account and personal identification number (PIN)
  • your personal details
  • exam information.

Wireless access and eduroam

If you have a laptop or other mobile device, use the eduroam wifi service to connect to the internet. Eduroam is available across the University, including in halls of residence.

ResNet provides free Internet access directly to your study bedroom in University accommodation.

Bringing your own computer

Most students bring their own computers and mobile devices to university. You may find it useful to consider whether your studies will involve using specialist software or equipment, which require a powerful computer or a specific operating system, before buying a device.

Printing and photocopying

Many University study spaces have printers or photocopiers which you can use.

Important

Do not buy print credits before you have registered. They will not be added to your account and you will lose money. We do not give refunds for unused print credit.

Blackboard

Blackboard is our online learning environment to support and enhance your learning. Your tutor may use it for:

  • course notes
  • presentations
  • reading lists
  • assignment details
  • other study resources.

Blackboard provides a range of tools for online communication, collaboration and assessment. You can also see and download information and templates for Personal Development Planning (PDP) as well as tools for study skills training. 

You can access Blackboard directly or through MyBristol.

Lecture recordings - Re/Play

Re/Play is the University’s lecture recording system.

It captures audio and slide content of formal lectures. Staff can include extra material to enhance online learning materials.

Re/Play can:

  • help you to engage more during lectures;
  • help you to review lectures to improve your understanding of complex concepts;
  • provide an extra revision tool.

We do not record all classes. Your lecturers can tell you which of your classes are recorded. Lectures recorded using Re/Play will be available to you via the related Blackboard course.

Data storage service - Filestore

You should save your important files and documents in a secure location. Our Filestore is backed up automatically and scanned for viruses or malware. Other options for data storage include Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive.

Cloud storage - Microsoft OneDrive

Microsoft OneDrive provides large cloud storage for you to upload and store files. You can access these files from anywhere.

Access OneDrive from your Microsoft Office 365 portal, available via MyBristol.

Personal storage - MyFiles

You get 5GB of fast storage space on our system to save your files and work.

You can access your filestore space:

  • from the Student Remote Desktop;
  • when you log into a Windows computer within the University (the space is accessible as drive “O:” ).

Software

You have access to a range of software through open access computers in libraries and study spaces as well as through the Remote Desktop.

A range of free and reduced cost software is available, including Microsoft Office.

Access online resources away from the University campus

Many resources are available to use both on site and outside of the University. You can access many resources using the Student Remote Desktop. The Student Remote Desktop works in exactly the same way as if you were using a computer on campus.

Help and support

Support is available from staff on the IT Service Desk and students can use the free Laptop and Mobile Clinic.

Stay safe online

Please beware of phishing emails claiming to come from the official student finance bodies and asking for account details. Genuine loan companies will never email you directly to ask for personal information. If you receive a suspicious email, don’t follow any enclosed links or disclose any security details, but report it to the IT Service Desk service-desk@bristol.ac.uk.

Only ever log into your account through the relevant official website.
