Research Data

Research Data Management: from planning to publication

The majority of funders require you to anticipate how you will manage your research data at the grant writing stage, and expect you to have considered how you will make it available to others (and under what conditions) at the end of your project. This workshop will provide an introductory overview of the importance of Research Data Management, and focus on the planning and publication stages of the research lifecycle. By the end of this session you’ll be able to:

  • Recognise the importance of the Data Management Plan (DMP) in meeting funder requirements
  • Know how to publish underlying research data and cite it via a Data Access Statement
  • Understand the options available for controlling access to your data

This workshop is run by Library Research Support and has no prerequisites, and is ideally suited for early career and postgraduate researchers, and research staff.

Managing ethically sensitive research data: from planning to sharing

This three-hour workshop is aimed at academics and postgraduate researchers who are conducting or planning to conduct research using ethically sensitive data, including personal data covered by GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Attendees will learn:

  • what counts as sensitive data and what the risks are for different types of data
  • how to complete a data management plan to address these risks
  • when and how to obtain consent for data collection and sharing
  • what legislation affects collection and sharing of sensitive data in research
  • approaches for anonymization of sensitive research data
  • how to share sensitive research data, including via the University’s research data repository, data.bris
  • where to go for help.

This workshop is run by Library Research Support and has no prerequisites.

GDPR essentials for researchers

This one-hour workshop is aimed at academics and postgraduate researchers who work with personal data in a research capacity and need a quick introduction to the essentials of UK-GDPR. For example, if you collect names and addresses to contact potential research participants, record interviews, or analyse demographic or genetic information, you're dealing with personal data and need to make sure you are doing so in line with GDPR requirements.

This workshop will introduce you to the basics of the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018, including:

  • Demystifying GDPR jargon
  • What your responsibilities are
  • What exemptions apply to data processing for research
  • Privacy impact assessments for high-risk studies
  • How to handle data transfers outside the UK

This workshop is run by Library Research Support and has no prerequisites.

Please note that this workshop is intended as a quick introduction to the basics of GDPR from a research perspective. For an in-depth look at handling sensitive research data including anonymisation and data sharing, please sign up for our three-hour workshop "Managing ethically sensitive research data: from planning to sharing".
