The School of Mathematics is involved in the following activities:

Access to Bristol (Year 12 and 13)

Mathematics has a stream on the Access to Bristol programme. Please find out more here.

Levelling Up tutoring programme

A project currently in progress, this short-term tutoring programme is being developed using material from the London Mathematical Society’s Levelling Up programme. It aims to address gaps in knowledge between year 13 and university through providing students with a solid mathematical foundation, supported by undergraduate students. This is for students who live within Bristol and participants will be nominated by their teachers, based on their academic potential. This project is being supported by the Heilbronn Institute.

Numbercrunch

Prof Oliver Johnson has recently published a popular science book Numbercrunch, that aims to demystify the everyday mathematics that surrounds us. His recent article for The Observer provides a taster of what to expect from the book.

Outreach talks

Individual members of the School have delivered popular science talks at external events. In recent years these include a talk on `Quantum Computing’ by Prof. Noah Linden at the Somerscience Festival, and a talk by Dr. Mike Blake on `Quantum Mechanics and Gravity’ as part of a New Scientist: Instant Expert event.

Royal Institution Maths Masterclasses

In recent years several members of the School have participated in RI Maths Masterclasses delivered to year 8 pupils. This is a collaboration between local universities (Bristol, Bath, UWE, Bath Spa) and the School’s Jayne Stansfield is a current committee member.

School speakers

We have current PhD students who can deliver a talk/workshop/assembly in person (for local schools) or virtually. Please contact: science-outreach@bristol.ac.uk

Stem UP

A programme for year 12 and students completing an Access to HE course. This is a multidisciplinary programme, giving participants further insight into studying and working within STEM. Please find out more here.

Summer schools

Mathematics currently has a stream with Physics on our Virtual Summer School, Sutton Trust Summer School and Insight into Bristol Summer School
