Individual Audits in Primary Care Years 3 and 4

These pages are for GP teachers. If you are interested in studying medicine at Bristol, please see details of our MB ChB Medicine course.

Year 3 or 4 students may choose to do a Primary Care audit for their SSC. This enables you to spend a further 3 weeks in General Practice, get a feel for how primary care is organised, and contribute to improving the quality of care. You will be supervised by a GP and usually work closely with an audit administrator in the practice. The topic will be chosen by the GP, as an area where they want to look at the quality of care provided and hopefully make improvements. You will do background reading, and help agree the standards to be measured. At the end of the project you will present a report to the practice, including doing a presentation at a practice meeting.

There are two ways of organising this:

a) Arrangement through Centre for Academic Primary Care

The Centre is able to match students with general practices in Bristol and surrounding areas within easy access. You will be given a choice of topic, particularly if you apply early. All students interested in doing their SSC in general practice should register an expression of interest with the Primary Care Teaching Office.

b) Arrangement through one of your COMP2 General Practices

You are also free to make your own arrangements with a general practice, usually with one of the GPs to whom you were attached during your COMP2 placements. This is usually easier if the practice is in Bristol or nearby, unless you have a car and are prepared to travel further. We cannot refund travel expenses. Please advise the Primary Care Teaching Office if you make such an arrangement.
