CAPC’s Teaching team wins Education and Training Team of the Year Award

2 March 2017

The Centre for Academic Primary Care’s (CAPC) Teaching team has won the Education and Training Team of the Year Award at Health Education England South West’s 2017 Star Awards.

The award was made at Health Education England South West’s conference in Taunton last night.

The team won the award for the ‘Whole Person Care Course’, which uses innovative techniques, such as art and performance, to teach trainee doctors how to deliver truly patient-focused care.

Dr Trevor Thompson, Reader in Healthcare Education and leader of the CAPC Teaching team, said: “Medicine is both an art and a science. Here at the University of Bristol we have made an explicit and vigorous attempt to teach the art of medicine to ensure that respect, compassion, critical thinking and creativity inform the consulting styles of tomorrow’s doctors.

“Our students are encouraged to reflect on the deeper aspects of patient and practitioner experience through artwork in a variety of media. Over 400 of these now sit on the www.outofourheads.net website which has enjoyed international recognition.”

The team was up against stiff competition from four other finalists, including teams from Exeter College, Rolle Medical Partnership, Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.
