An innovative SSC entitled the “Global Environment and Human Health”, designed and implemented by Dr Trevor Thompson, was selected as an example of best practice by the Public Health Educators in Medical Schools (PHEMS) group for presentation at the January 2010 meeting of the Academy of Medical Teachers.

The eight-week module invites expert presenters to introduce topics including: the science of climate change; water scarcity; sustainable food; greening of the NHS; peak oil; and behaviour change. A key feature each year is the direct action project – for the last two years this has been to organise a farmers’ market in the university.

The SSC seeks to help students think systemically and critically and appreciate the many links between human health and the health of the environment.
