Early-Career Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Primary Care Research

An exciting post-doctoral research fellowship opportunity has arisen at the Centre for Academic Primary Care, University of Bristol. The NIHR School for Primary Care Research (http://www.spcr.nihr.ac.uk/) is a partnership between nine leading academic centres for primary care research in England, one of which is the Centre for Academic Primary Care at the University of Bristol. The NIHR SPCR is funding some 2-year post-doctoral fellowships for primary care scientists (non-medical) who wish to be based within one of the NIHR SPCR partner institutions.

The post-doctoral fellowships are to support individuals to write up papers from their PhD, develop their own research portfolio and apply for their own grant funding (e.g. a NIHR fellowship). Applicants must have completed a PhD in an area of relevance to primary care - either already completed their doctorate or submitted it for examination at the time of application – and be no more than 3 years post-doctorate at the time of application.

Individuals with a strong academic record who wish to develop a career in primary care research are invited to apply to the NIHR SPCR directly, indicating at which University within the SPCR they would like to be based. Following application to the NIHR SPCR, there is a two-stage selection process: firstly, an internal selection process within the SPCR partner institution identified by the candidate (e.g. the Centre for Academic Primary Care at the University of Bristol); and secondly a central selection process by a SPCR panel.

Candidates who wish to be based within the Centre for Academic Primary Care at the University of Bristol must be committed to developing a programme of research related to one of our themes (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/primaryhealthcare/researchthemes/). We are seeking able primary care scientists (non-medical) who show promise to secure research grants, develop an excellent publication record and become a future leader within primary care research. Candidates must be able to generate research questions and designs appropriate for primary care.

Individuals from a range of backgrounds are welcome to apply, such as health services research, economics, >medical statistics, medical sociology, health psychology or human geography. Candidates will be expected to come up with a personalized training plan.

The Fellowship holder will be expected to develop their own research interests in collaboration with others within the Centre for Academic Primary Care. Although we want someone with the drive and motivation to take their own research forward, it is also important that the successful applicant contributes to the intellectual life of the Academic Centre and the School, and to a co-operative, collaborative and productive working environment.

This is an excellent opportunity to secure a salaried fellowship funded by a prestigious funder (NIHR SPCR) that will enable you to consolidate and develop as a post-doctoral researcher, allowing protected time to build your grant and publication portfolio, and for your research vision to be developed through collaboration with senior academic staff.
