BPI 2024 Conference Bursaries

The Bristol Poverty Institute (BPI) are excited to welcome a wide range of attendees to our upcoming hybrid conference on Poverty and Social Justice in a Post-COVID World in June. However, we recognise that costs of attending a conference can be a barrier to attendance for some, particularly those with lived experience of the topics under discussion. We therefore have a limited number of bursaries available to enable everyone to participate. Please note that funds are limited, so please be respectful and only apply for these bursaries if you genuinely need them.

Travel bursaries (Day 1 in person, Wednesday 5th June)

We are keen to encourage non-academic attendance at our conference but we recognise that not everyone has the financial means to cover travel to attend an in-person event in Bristol. We are therefore pleased to announce that we are making some UK travel bursaries available to conference attendees on Day 1, for whom transport costs would be a barrier to participation. These funds are intended for those whose outside academia whose salaried roles would not cover the costs of attending the conference for the in-person day. This includes, for example, people who work or volunteer at community organisations and small charities, unemployed people or freelancers working in a relevant field. University staff and students are not eligible for these travel bursaries, as the purpose is to maximise engagement from other sectors and civil society.

If you are awarded a bursary, the BPI can reimburse return economy travel to the conference venue to from one location within the UK (i.e. your home or work address) up to a specified amount. Award recipients should use the mode of transport which offers the best value for money where possible and practical, and we would normally expect travel to be via public transport for both economic and environmental considerations.

To apply, please read the following guidance and complete the application form:

Funds will be allocated on a rolling basis, so we recommend you contact the BPI team via bpi-conference-2024@bristol.ac.uk to check availability before submitting your application and please apply early to avoid disappointment. If your application is successful, when you arrive at the conference you will be provided with a form to claim back the agreed travel expenses.

Data bursaries (Day 2 online, Thursday 6th June)

The BPI works extensively with partners from all over the globe and we are aware of some of the challenges our collaborators can face in accessing online events, such as the costs involved in using pay-as-you-go internet data. We are therefore pleased to announce that we are making some data bursaries available to conference attendees on Day 2 for whom data costs would be a barrier to participation.

These bursaries are for the equivalent of up to £15 (GBP) each, based on the currency exchange rates from xe.com on the day of submission. If the transaction will incur foreign exchange fees and/or charges, we will also cover these costs to ensure the recipient receives their full bursary. Payment will be made by bank transfer.

To apply, please read the following guidance and complete the application form:

Whilst these data bursaries are primarily intended for participants from Low- and Middle-Income Countries, we recognise that internet access can also be prohibitive for those in other countries. We will therefore accept applications from anyone in the world who is reliant on pay-as-you-go data to access the internet, including the UK.
