Superstar staff member: from non-runner to marathon finisher in two years

Events Officer Jess Bishop during and after the London Marathon

Press release issued: 3 October 2022

A University staffer who “couldn’t run for 10 seconds” just two years ago has completed the London Marathon.

Events Officer Jess Bishop was greeted on the finishing line by two best friends holding prosecco and slippers.

Jess said: “It was the most incredible experience! I honestly can’t believe what I’ve just achieved – I’ve run a marathon!

“I slept with my medal on the bedside table so I could make sure it wasn’t a dream when I woke up.”

Completing the 26.2 mile course was the culmination of two years’ training for Jess - which started as a way to boost her mental health during lockdown.

Jess hated school cross country and as an adult avoided running wherever she could. But in mid-2020 she reluctantly took her doctor’s advice and strapped on a pair of trainers.

Jess said: “Looking back its hard to believe how far I’ve come. During the pandemic I was working for an events company and I was furloughed for eight months, with my job put at risk.

“It all took a toll on my mental health. I took up running but I never dreamt I could run a marathon. Back then I couldn’t run for 10 seconds.

“Even now if I’m having a low day I’ll go out for a run and I’ll always feel so much better afterwards.”

Jess downloaded a couch to 5k app and before long she had the bug. She entered the University’s Bristol Run Series – a virtual 5k, 10k, 15k and half marathon designed to get students, staff and local people active – and was soon taking part in events like the Edinburgh Half and Severn Bridge Half.

That’s when she applied to the London Marathon and, to her surprise, was given one of their few ballot slots.

“There were a few swearwords when I first found out, because I really didn’t expect to get a place,” Jess said. “But then I decided I had to go for it.

“It’s been hard at times because training four times a week is really knackering and can take up a lot of time. But it’s definitely worth it.”

Jess has already raised £1,000 for the mental health charity Mind (smashing her £500 target). You can donate on her JustGiving page.

Will Marsh, Deputy Director of Communications at the University of Bristol, said: “What a huge achievement! It’s amazing to see the progress Jess has made in just two years.

“She has done brilliantly and it gives hope to us all!”

So what advice would Jess give to anyone thinking of taking up running?

Jess said: “If I can do it anyone can do it - so just go for it. Download Couch to 5k and get out there!”
