Phil Gould, 1948–2021

Phil Gould

11 June 2021

Phil Gould, Estates Assistant in the Victoria Rooms, passed away earlier this month. Matt Davies and other colleagues offer a remembrance.

Phil worked in the Victoria Rooms from 2010, providing an invariably cheerful and helpful front-of-house service. He liked engaging with people and struck up a rapport with students, staff and visitors alike. He was diligent in setting up staging and rooms for activities and would regularly do the same for large events on weekends. Phil set the tone for the building, and was dedicated to his role and to the department. His good humour and consideration for others will be greatly missed by all who worked with him, following his sudden passing last week.

Megan Holmes in the Music Department writes:

Phil was a kind and caring person always smiling and happy to chat. He loved to tell a joke or break into song and always made sure the Victoria Rooms was dressed in a fantastic set of Christmas decorations. I will always be thankful for the help he gave me with recital preparations, lunchtime concerts and various building activity. He was a huge support to staff and students and epitomised the character of the department and the Victoria Rooms. I have had so many great conversations with Phil over the years and so many laughs with him – memories to treasure forever. Thank you, Phil, for making our working days so much richer and enjoyable.

Peter Scott in the Music Department writes:

Phil was a perfect gentleman and had an excellent relationship with both our students and with visitors to the Victoria Rooms. It was an absolute privilege to work with him – I will miss him.
