Lace up! Virtual running events hit Bristol

Medals are up for grabs as the University of Bristol launches a virtual 5k, 10k and half marathon.

The ‘Bristol Run Series’ events are free and will see runners logging their attempts on apps before sending in their results to the organisers.

Runners can access free training programmes curated by the University’s professional coaches - including multiple couch to 5k programmes – through the Series’ online Support Hub. The Hub also has advice on warm-up and cool-down routines, injury prevention, route planning and nutrition.  

All entrants can get exclusive Bristol Run Series medals and t-shirts. Each medal features an iconic Bristol landmark, with all three interlocking to make a complete scene.

Runners have a window to log their run and send it in to the University:

  • 5k: Saturday 20 to Sunday 21 March  
  • 10k: Saturday 8 to Sunday 16 May 
  • Half marathon: Saturday 18 to Sunday 26 September 

Professor Hugh Brady, Vice-Chancellor and President at the University of Bristol, said: “Over the course of the three city-wide events, we hope thousands of people will take up the challenge and go running safely in their local areas.

“Getting involved in a running event has never been easier – all you need are trainers and a phone.”

Medals cost £2.75 each but are free if you sign up to all three events by March 19. Bristol Run Series performance T-shirts cost £6.

General entry to each event is free. Sign up through the University of Bristol Sport app or website. Entry for the half marathon opens in March.   

In response to the cancellation of the 2020 Great Bristol 10k, more than £4,000 was donated to the University of Bristol Healthy Minds programme and NHS Charities Together. This year runners can donate to the same charities when registering.

Matt Birch, the University’s Director of Sport Exercise and Health, said: “We’re really excited to see the city come together for this. It’s a great chance to get in shape and have some fun too.

“You don’t have to be an athlete to take part. Whether you run, jog or walk it – we’d loved you to get involved.”
