New Athena SWAN awards for Bristol

6 October 2017

Two of the University’s schools have successfully gained Athena SWAN Awards and the University as a whole has successfully renewed its Athena SWAN Bronze Award for the third time.

The Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research.

In May 2015 it was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law, and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

The recipients of the April 2017 awards are:
  • School of Experimental Psychology (led by Dr Angela Attwood) – Bronze Award
  • Bristol Dental School (led by Dr Andrea Waylen) – Bronze Award
Each award is valid for the next four years and bring the University’s total number of Athena SWAN awards to 15 (three Silver, 12 Bronze).

The University will continue to advance its Athena SWAN action plan through the newly formed Gender Equality Group, which is co-chaired by Professor Jonathan Sandy (Dean of Health Sciences) and Sue Clyne (Head of Organisational Development).
