Open day welcomes 15,000 people to Bristol

Press release issued: 9 September 2015

Over 15,000 visitors will be visiting the city on Saturday [12 September] for the University of Bristol’s final open day of the year. The event, aimed at future undergraduates, gives visitors an insight into university life and the chance to see for themselves all that the University and city have to offer.

It comes as the University celebrates winning the Whatuni award for best city life in a major survey of 20,000 students, beating off stiff competition from Cardiff, Liverpool, Newcastle, Northumbria, Nottingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester and Sussex.

During the open day, the University will be launching a new kind of degree course called the Bristol Innovation Programmes, which merges traditional subjects with the opportunity to learn how to become an entrepreneur and innovator.

The programme is unique because it allows undergraduates to choose a core academic subject to study, such as History, Computer Science or Anthropology, while learning about how to innovate, develop and plan their own business venture from day one.

Each of the University’s academic schools and departments will host subject talks, displays and interactive demonstrations, designed to give visitors a taste of all that the University has to offer.

The brand new £56 million Life Sciences Building, opened by Sir David Attenborough, and the Students’ Union, recently reopened after a £30 million refurbishment, will be open for visitors to look around.

Prospective students will also have the chance to talk to academics at the cutting-edge of their field, with 83 per cent of the University’s research rated as world-leading and internationally excellent in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Subject talks will give future students an insight into the wide variety of courses on offer at the University, including ‘Lasers in chemistry’, and ‘Studying Innovation at Bristol – and finding out how to change the world’.

General information sessions relating to aspects of university life, such as student finance, will be held in the Victoria Rooms, along with specific sessions for parents and carers, teachers, careers advisors and mature students. Wills Memorial Building will host the open day exhibition where visitors will have the opportunity to find out more about applying to Bristol and the wide range of services and facilities.

Visitors will have the opportunity to view a selection of student residences in the city centre, Clifton and Stoke Bishop, with a free shuttle bus service running throughout the day between the main University campus and Stoke Bishop.

Bristol Veterinary School, based on the Langford Campus, will be open to visitors interested in veterinary nursing and veterinary science courses.

Rosie Wildman, Undergraduate Events Officer at the University of Bristol, said: "Open days are an ideal opportunity for visitors to see the University, our fantastic city, subject areas, facilities and accommodation, not to mention meeting current students and academic staff across the University campus. We look forward to welcoming future students to the University of Bristol."
