RSA Fellowship for Marianne Hester

Professor Marianne Hester

8 October 2015

Professor Marianne Hester OBE from the University’s School for Policy Studies has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce (RSA).

Professor Hester, Chair in Gender, Violence and International Policy, and Head of the Centre for Gender and Violence Research, was elected in recognition of her ‘expertise in the field of social policy, particularly the focus on violence, abuse and gender relations’.

As one of the UK’s leading researchers of gender-based violence, Professor Hester has led groundbreaking research on many aspects of violence, abuse and gender relations. Her work has directly influenced health, criminal justice and family policy and practice in the UK, Europe and other countries. She has served as a Specialist Advisor to the House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee inquiry into domestic violence, forced marriage and ‘honour’-based violence, and as an expert on the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Programme Development Group for guidance on domestic violence and abuse. Last year, she collected an Order of the British Empire (OBE).

The RSA exists to ‘enrich society through ideas and action’. It aims to create the conditions for the enlightened thinking and collaborative action needed to address today's most pressing social challenges by nurturing networks of innovators, and through researching, testing and sharing practical interventions.
