Students and staff from the Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials (BCFN) travelled to China recently to attend a conference in Beijing and two symposiums at the universities of Tsinghua and Jilin.

The trip, organised by Professor Charl Faul from the School of Chemistry, saw eight BCFN students and three academics visit Tsinghua University in Beijing for a one-day symposium before attending the three-day conference at the Beijing International Convention Center.

The ChinaNANO 2015 conference attracted students and academics from around the world and covered all aspects of nanoscience, with both academic and industrial relevance. All three Bristol academics, along with Oliver Gould, a final-year PhD student, gave talks. The students presented posters, and of these, Bristol [postgraduates?] Jason Potticary and Piotr Wolanin both won ChinaNANO best poster awards from a selection of hundreds of entries.

The Bristol students and staff then travelled to Changchun, where they were hosted by Jilin University for the second one-day symposium. This followed a similar format to the first with a mixture of both academic and student talks from both universities as well as a poster session where the students could discuss their work and explore possibilities for future collaboration.

Professor Faul said:  ‘This visit was a fantastic opportunity for the University to engage with and build strong collaborative research links with the best students and academics in the areas of supramolecular and functional nanomaterials in China. We look forward to hosting our Chinese colleagues and their students in Bristol in the near future.’
