Major EU grant success for Bristol-led peacebuilding study

2 March 2015

The University of Bristol has led a successful Horizon 2020 bid for a project to evaluate the EU’s work in peacebuilding.

‘Preventing and Responding to Conflict: Developing Civilian Capabilities for a Sustainable Peace’ (EU-CIVCAP) is a three-year project that will provide a comprehensive, comparative and multidisciplinary analysis of the EU's current conflict prevention and peacebuilding activities. The grant is for the amount of €1,714,976.

The project has three specific aims:

  • to assess EU civilian capabilities for external conflict prevention and peacebuilding;
  • to identify and document lessons learned and best practice in these areas;
  • to enhance future policy practice and research.

EU-CIVCAP will be based at the Global Insecurities Centre (GIC) in the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies at the University of Bristol, and led by the principal investigator, Dr Ana Juncos Garcia. Dr Ryerson Christie and Professor Tim Edmunds, also of the GIC, are co-investigators.

The GIC leads a consortium of ten institutions across 8 different countries in Europe. These include the University of Maastricht (Netherlands), Roskilde University (Denmark), Aberdeen University (UK), the Istituto Affari Internazionali (Italy), the Centre for European Policy Studies (Belgium), the EU Satellite Centre (Spain), the European Peacebuilding Liaison Office (Belgium), Belgrade Centre for Security Policy (Serbia) and Transparency Solutions (UK).

The project is due to start in September 2015.
