Medicine and humanities join forces for Wellcome-funded breathlessness project

Professor Havi Carel Wellcome Library, London

26 November 2014

Professor Havi Carel in the Department of Philosophy has received a joint senior investigator award worth £1.5 million from the Wellcome Trust for a cross-disciplinary project on breathing and breathlessness.

Life of Breath, a collaborative project between Professor Carel and Professor Jane Macnaughton at Durham University, combines clinical and cultural approaches to breathlessness, and to its ‘non-pathological’ counterpart, breathing. The project’s primary clinical focus is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

The project has two main phases: studying breathlessness from a variety of medical humanities perspectives; and using the outcomes to inform and improve clinical practice.

You can find further details on the Life of Breath website; regular updates will appear on the project blog and on Twitter @lifeofbreath.
