Students win award for volunteering efforts

Press release issued: 18 January 2011

Students from the University of Bristol have won a ‘vinspire’ award for their volunteering efforts in running a lunch club for the city’s senior residents.

Students from the University of Bristol have won a vinspire award for their volunteering and community engagement efforts in running a lunch club for the city’s senior residents.

Run by ten volunteers from the Students’ Union Student Community Action Group, the Daycentre Lunch Club provides senior residents with a chance to get out and engage with students.

The vinspire award provides formal recognition of the time and skills invested by student volunteers, and of the resulting benefits to people, communities and the environment.

The club, which runs every Wednesday in term time, is led by final year students David Leak and Emma Penson, who help arrange a series of events and trips throughout the year. The project is funded by a vcashpoint grant from the youth volunteering charity, v.

Ms Penson said: “The Daycentre makes such a difference to our members and the students involved also really enjoy the opportunity to do something outside of the stereotypical university life. I find it really interesting talking to our members and they love to hear stories of what the students have been doing. Thank you to everyone, particularly those at vinspired for their support in making this a success.”

Eoin Earley, Volunteer Co-ordinator for all the Student Community Action projects at the University, said: “The Daycentre Lunch Club has been a great success for everyone, and it would be great to extend the invitation to the wider Bristol community while we have the committed enthusiastic volunteers to meet a greater demand.”
