A research group set up jointly by the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England (UWE) to study aspects of widening participation in education has been awarded a £250,000 Research Project Grant by the Leverhulme Trust for a three-year project entitled 'Paired Peers: the impact of class on student university experience'.

The study will compare the experience of matched pairs of working-class and middle-class undergraduates in an ‘old’ and a ‘new’ university – the University of Bristol and UWE – with special attention to relative environments and cultures of support, ease of integration into the student body, and prospects of employment after graduation.

The team consists of Professor Harriet Bradley and Dr Tony Hoare from the University of Bristol; and Professor Ann-Marie Bathmaker and Dr Richard Waller from UWE.

The project will begin with the October 2010 intake.
