Professor Martin Birchall

Professor Martin Birchall

21 December 2007

Martin Birchall, Visiting Professor in Clinical Science at South Bristol, is to take up the newly established John Farndon Chair of Surgery.

He is the first holder of this title, which was created to commemorate and celebrate the many contributions that Professor John Farndon made to the life of the academic surgical community during his time at Bristol. It was the University’s intention that the post-holder should embody all of John’s achievements as a clinician, teacher and educator, and researcher.

Professor Birchall fulfils all these criteria. He is an internationally recognised researcher, with interests in both mucosal immunology as applied to laryngeal transplantation and cancer of the head and neck. His clinical practice reflects these interests, and he has an extensive tertiary referral practice for ENT malignancies. Professor Birchall also has a formidable reputation as a teacher and educator at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels.

‘The John Farndon Chair will become a major focus for the discipline of academic surgery in Bristol and will help to strengthen the University’s position as national and international leaders in the discipline,’ said Professor Gareth Williams, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. ‘We have every confidence that Martin will get this initiative off to a flying start and can look forward to working with him to build on our reputation in this crucially important field.’
