Sixty young people from Teyfant Community School, Hartcliffe, will join Bristol University students and staff for an all-action programme of sporting fun at the University’s Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health on Thursday, 8 December.

The day offers pupils the chance to try trampolining, badminton, basketball, multi-skill games, football and tennis with guidance from students and staff.  The event is a training module for University students and staff, who are studying to become Community Sports Leaders.  Next term they will be volunteering in the local community as sports coaches.

The Community Sports Volunteer Scheme trains University of Bristol students and staff as Community Sports Leaders placing them in local children’s sport and activity projects as volunteers. All leaders receive free training in the nationally recognised Community Sports Leader Award with additional training in first aid and child protection.

Karen O’ Donohoe, Community Sport Development Officer at the University, said: “The scheme provides students and staff with an interest in sport and activity an opportunity to get involved with community projects while they are studying or working at the University of Bristol with the added bonus of obtaining a recognised qualification.

“The Sports Day enables the Teyfant School pupils to try out some new sports and experience an aspect of University life. Some pupils may discover a talent that will lead to a career in sport; others may be inspired to pursue higher education; and judging by last year’s event everyone, including the leaders, should have lots of fun.”
