Press release issued: 1 December 2004

Up to 120 local children will be having a fun and festive time at the tenth annual Kids' Christmas party organised by Bristol University's Student Community Action (SCA) on Saturday, December 4.

Up to 120 local children will be having a fun and festive time at the tenth annual Kids' Christmas party organised by Bristol University's Student Community Action (SCA) on Saturday, December 4.

The party, for four- to 12-year-olds from areas including Knowle, Southmead, Avonmouth and St Paul's, will take place at Churchill Hall, Stoke Bishop, from 2 to 5 pm.

Entertainment will be in abundance with a magician, party games, a disco with face-painting, karaoke, fire engine, bouncy castle and, of course, Father Christmas in his grotto giving out presents.

A tea party, complete with festive carol singing, will round off the afternoon.

Sally Earthrowl, SCA Co-ordinator, said: "There are many more young children in Bristol than SCA can support through its various year-round projects.  This is our way of reaching out to more of them and making their Christmas extra special.

"SCA has over 800 volunteers in total, working on projects from a night shelter for the homeless to a day centre for the elderly, to helping out in local schools and much, much more.

"It's great that students want to give their time and become involved in the community while they are studying at Bristol."

The party is sponsored by the Co-operative Group.

SCA would like to thank all local shops and companies who have donated food, toys, decorations and gifts.

SCA operate 30 separate projects in the community, covering an enormous variety of subjects and types of work.  The range of projects range from helping the elderly to helping disabled persons, and from helping homeless people to assisting school children.  Most of the projects are run entirely by SCA, whilst some are affiliated with larger community or national organisations.

This is the first of SCA's annual events.  Next year's events include:

  • Saturday, February 12 to 19: SCA week.
  • Thursday, February 17: SCA dinner dance for 80 local elderly residents.
  • Friday, February 18: SCA fundraiser in aid of St Julian's Trust, who SCA work with at Nightshelter.
  • Thursday, March 10: oSCArs, SCA's big volunteering celebration party.
