Singing for sex

To mark World AIDS Day [Sunday, December 1], Bristol University Medics, in conjunction with the University's Students' Union, are holding a talent show called Singing for sex.

The evening, which will take place on Tuesday, December 3 in the Anson Rooms from 7.30 pm, aims to be fun and informative: raising awareness and educating people about Aids. All proceeds raised on the night will be donated to the Terrence Higgins Trust and Kenya Acorn Project.

Auditions for the event are being held on Monday, November 18 from 7 pm in the Students' Union. Solo and group acts are welcome. All contestants need to do is come along to the audition, pick a backing track from among 500 and sing their heart out.

Fiona Cook, the Students' Union Vice-President, who has responsibility for welfare, said: 'According to the Terrence Higgins Trust there have been 2,500 new diagnoses of HIV in the UK every year and that figure has been rising steadily for the last six years.

'We hope to get the message across that if you're having sex, make sure it's protected sex.'

Clare Finch, 4th year medical student, added: 'We want people to realise the global scale of this problem. Forty million people are living with Aids, with 28.1 million living in Sub-Saharan Africa. We want to encourage people to join the vision of the STOP AIDS CAMPAIGN as they lobby for urgently scaled up international action.'

Auditions for Singing for sex take place on Monday, November 18 from 7 pm, in the University of Bristol Union, Queen's Road, Bristol.

Singing for sex will be held on Tuesday, December 3 from 7.30 to 11 pm, in the University of Bristol Union, Anson Rooms, Queen's Road, Bristol. Tickets are priced at £3.50.
