Award for Bristol scientist


An applied mathematician at Bristol University has been honoured by the Society of Underwater Technology in recognition of his major contribution to oceanography, especially in the area of wave mechanics.

Howell Peregrine, Professor of Applied Mathematics and Head of the Applied Mathematics and Numerical Analysis Group at the University, was presented with his award in London last night on board the Master Mariners HQ Ship Wellington.

Professor Peregrine's work on water waves has covered a wide range of topics including wave forces on structures, breaking waves, wave interaction with currents, wave overtopping and the effects of strong turbulence at water surfaces by breaking waves.

Professor Peregrine, said: 'I'm very honoured to have received this award, and am delighted that my work is considered to be valuable by those involved in marine applications.'
