We are delighted to announce that CHOMBEC will be hosting a research meeting of the West Gallery Music Association on 6 February 2016.

The West Gallery Music Association is an informal group of singers, instrumentalists and scholars. We share an interest in the sacred music, psalmody and hymnody, and the secular music and dance of the men and women who performed from the west galleries of parish churches, in chapels, and around the towns and villages of England during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Topics will include:

  • Chris Brown: ‘The Manuscript Book of Henry Bayliffe’
  • Ian Cutts: ‘“Can I prove it?” Research problems in investigating the career of Matthew Cooke (fl c1790)’
  • Sally Drage: ‘Primitive Methodism: ranting revivalism to respectability’
  • Jenifer Ellis: ‘The music of G. Griffin, of Wingrave, Buckinghamshire’
  • Edmund Gooch: ‘William Bennett of Combeinteignhead, and his New Set of Psalm Tunes and Anthems [c1770]’
  • Tam Mucklow: ‘Continued examination of Frances Anne Head's Choral Psalmody (1840)’
  • Bob and Jackie Patten: ‘The Odcombe Carols’
  • Francis Roads: ‘A survey of the 13 parochial anthems and 46 strophic tunes of John Bishop of Winchester (1665-1737)’
  • Tony Singleton (read in absentia): ‘The building by subscription of a singing gallery in Cuckfield aka Cookfield, Sussex in 1699/1700’

The meeting will begin at 10.45 and end at 4.00, no registration is required.
