Areas of expertise High-energy physicists study the fundamental constituents of matter, the fields that allow them to interact, and the basic nature of space and time. I work with particle accelerators that create extreme energy densities, similar to those in the early universe. By carefully studying quantum particles created in these conditions, we can learn about the few very simple laws that underlie all natural phenomena.

My research is unashamedly curiosity-driven, but has many technological spin offs that can benefit science and society; my group also performs applied research into new computing, communications, and data processing tools that are needed for the international CMS experiment at CERN, Geneva. The ideas we develop in Bristol will be vital in allowing new discoveries made by processing vast amounts of scientific data. These could include the identification of extra compactified spatial dimensions, or evidence for superstring theory.
