Areas of expertise My expertise is in the area of understanding natural climate/environmental variability and to use this knowledge to better predict future changes, including their impact on all aspects of human society. This work includes understanding the causes of past climate change (on all time scales from the last century to the last few hundred million years) and predicting future climate change, especially changes in storm tracks and other extreme weather events. A lot of this work makes use of advanced computer models of the whole Earth system. This requires the use of some of the largest supercomputer available. Such work contributes to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (and ultimately to government) by evaluating the climate models and evaluating our understanding of climate.
