Areas of expertise Osteoarthritis is a disease characterised by loss of joint cartilage. By gaining a better understanding of the process by which this happens we hope to identify targets that could be used to prevent osteoarthritis progression.

Zebrafish are translucent and develop rapidly. This, combined with their excellent genetics, makes them an ideal model to screen for new genes controlling bone and cartilage homeostasis. We have generated transgenic fluorescent lines allowing us to follow bone and cartilage formation in live fish.

We are working with clinicians to test whether genes causing osteoarthritis-like conditions in zebrafish are involved in human osteoarthritis, and using zebrafish to give us insights into the action of human osteoarthritis genes during bone and cartilage development (Evangelou 2011).
