Areas of expertise Physiological Genomics of Central Cardio-Vascular Control

We focus on the central mechanisms which control arterial blood pressure and how they change in hypertension, which remains one of the most acute medical problems in the western world. Research projects in our laboratory are truly multi-disciplinary and involve joint efforts of several members of the group who all have a wide range of research expertise from the identification of the target genes through single cell studies to the validation of their role in the whole animal. Our main research methods are: viral gene transfer, patch clamp recordings in acute and cultured organotypic brain slices, living cell confocal imaging and Ca2+measurements. We use vectors targeted to specific neuronal populations to study and alter their functions. Using these methods we have obtained evidence for vasculo-neuronal signalling in the brain which is a novel concept of the NO-mediated signalling between the local endothelium and neurones.
