Areas of expertise My research focuses on the use of high-pressure experimental petrology, combined with numerical methods, to obtain a better understanding of mantle and lower crustal processes. These processes include the deep Earth water cycle, in which the formation and stability of hydrous minerals in subduction zone environments provides water to the lower mantle, and the composition and physical properties of the derived liquids and supercritical fluids.

Currently I am interested in the chemical evolution of magma during sill formation, with particular reference to the generation of magmas beneath volcanoes in the Caribbean. The chemistry of a magma changes in response to its changing physical environment, and in return the physical properties of the melts themselves change, directly influencing their extraction and eruption. These chemical changes are often recorded in the trace element partitioning between magma and crystals, and studying this partitioning behaviour has proven to be an invaluable tool in magmatic studies and volcanic geochemistry.
