Listening and hearing in the mathematics classroom; the development of classroom cultures; teacher development e.g., ways of working with video; the impact of competency-based curriculum innovation.

Biography

I came to the University after fifteen years experience in secondary schools teaching mathematics, running a maths department and latterly as an Assistant Headteacher. My PhD study is centred around tracking, in one school, the development of mathematics teachers and what happens in their classrooms, as they engage in a collaborative group reflecting on their practice.

Current projects

I am currently working with a school in South Gloucestershire on implementing a competency based curriculum in Key Stage 3. I have submitted an application for a grant to evaluate the impact of this innovation on students and teachers of mathematics.
Media experience I recently appeared on Radio 4's "Word of Mouth" talking about the use of silence in the classroom, as a result of research about how the quality of listening a teacher invokes in a classroom influences student responses.
