Membership of professional bodies I currently co-convene the Association of Social Anthropologists’ Network of Applied Anthropologists and I am the representative for Applied Medical Anthropology in the European Association of Social Anthropologists’ Medical Anthropology Network.

Areas of expertise I am a social anthropologist by background, who applies the techniques of anthropology and other qualitative methods in applied health research. Interests include long-term pain, osteoarthritis, disability in later life, help-seeking, clinical decision-making and public involvement in research.

Current work includes research into surgeons’ and patients’ views on decision-making in an Arthritis Research UK-funded project and broader work on joint replacement surgery within the NIHR-funded ‘RESTORE’ Research Programme. Among the grants on which I have been a principal or co-applicant include those from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Arthritis Research UK, the MRC Health Services Research Collaboration (MRC HSRC), North Bristol NHS Trust, and the Higher Education Academy Subject Network for Sociology, Anthropology and Politics (C-SAP).
