Keywords icebergs
co2 drawdown in the southern ocean
Areas of expertise I am funded under a Leverhulme Trust award to produce a quantitative estimate of the importance of icebergs in modifying CO2 drawdown in the Southern Ocean. For this project I will use computer models of the Earth System, representing the circulation of the ocean and atmosphere, iceberg trajectories and importantly the cycle of iron in the ocean. These models will be used to examine how the pattern of sediment release from icebergs can affect the uptake of atmospheric CO2 through changes in surface primary productivity. Both the present day and glacial periods will be studied to understand how variations in the number, distribution and flow paths of icebergs can produce large increases in primary productivity, and work out how much this has changed CO2 in the atmosphere, both in the past and in the future.
