Areas of expertise My research focuses on western liturgical chant in the middle ages, with particular interests in questions of transmission, orality, the relationship between Old Roman and Gregorian chant, analysis of formulaic chant, and the relationship between words and music in the Middle Ages. My first book, Gregorian and Old Roman Eighth-Mode Tracts, was published by Ashgate in 2002 and I have published articles in The Journal of Musicology and Plainsong and Medieval Music. I review for Music and Letters and Plainsong and Medieval Music, among others. I am currently completing a book entitled Grammar, Rhetoric and Exegesis in the Second-Mode Tracts.
