Kincaid at the Edinburgh Marathon, running to fight Blood Cancer!

13 June 2023

An opportunity to shout about some of the amazing achievements of our fantastic Wellcome PhD students both in and out of the lab.

Firstly, big congratulations to Emmaline Stotter, who is through to the UoB 3 Minute Thesis Final, with her talk titled "Fighting an Ancient Foe". Good Luck Emmaline!

Congratulations also goes to Chisato Tsuji who got second prize for her poster in a democratic vote at the Microtubule Conference 2023.

These have been a couple of papers published recently – congratulations to all the authors:

Tsuji C, Dodding M. Lumenal components of cytoplasmic microtubules. Biochem Soc Trans (2022) 50 (6): 1953–1962. DOI 10.1042/BST20220851

Needs H, Lorriman J, Pereira S, Henley J, Collinson I. The MitoLuc Assay System for Accurate Real-Time Monitoring of Mitochondrial Protein Import Within Mammalian Cells. Journal of Molecular Biology 435 (2023) 168129. DOI: 10.1016/j.jmb.2023.168129

Outside of science, it’s been a busy few months for Kincaid Ingham. Kincaid ran Edinburgh Marathon on 28th May, raising £1340 for Blood Cancer UK. Additionally, Kincaid captained UoB Men’s Hockey 1st XI to top of the league and hence secured promotion in BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport). This is into the highest league in the country (BUCS premier). And if that’s not enough, Kincaid also won a University of Bristol Sport ‘Bristol Red’.“The ‘Bristol Red’ was first introduced in 1979 and since that time over 350 students have received this award. A Bristol Red is one of the most prestigious sporting awards conferred by the University, and eligible students will have given outstanding performances on and off the pitch in their respective sports. Among the winners are World and Olympic champions and all of them have performed in their chosen sport with great distinction.”

A big shout out to our final year students on balancing writing their theses and applying for jobs. We are pleased that Georgie McDonald will be inspiring the next generation of scientists in her job as a biology secondary school teacher. Will Gibbs is staying in science as a senior scientist at Nexus Bioquest, whilst James Lorriman is saying goodbye to academia as he enters the world of patent law. Congratulations all. Looking forward to hearing how the jobs are!

Finally, congratulations to Chris Sharrock on his recent engagement! Good luck planning a wedding and doing your PhD!!

Looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year holds for our students.

Your Wellcome reps, Beth and Emily
