GDPR essentials: what is GDPR and why should I care?

4 March 2020, 1.00 PM - 4 March 2020, 2.00 PM

Arts Complex, Villa 13 Room G50, Woodland Road, Bristol, BS8 1TE

This one-hour workshop is aimed at academics and postgraduate researchers who work with personal data in a research capacity and need a quick introduction to the essentials of GDPR. For example, if you collect names and addresses to contact potential research participants, record interviews, or analyse demographic or genetic information, you're dealing with personal data and need to make sure you are doing so in line with GDPR requirements.

This workshop will introduce you to the basics of the EU General Data Protection Regulation and the UK Data Protection Act 2018, including:

  • Demystifying GDPR jargon

  • What your responsibilities are

  • What exemptions apply to data processing for research

  • Privacy impact assessments for high-risk studies

  • How to handle data transfers outside the EU

Register for this workshop via Eventbrite.

This workshop is run by Research Data Service and has no prerequisites. Please note that this workshop is intended as a quick introduction to the basics of GDPR from a research perspective. For an in-depth look at handling sensitive research data including anonymisation and data sharing, please sign up for our three-hour workshop, "Managing ethically sensitive research data: from planning to sharing".
