Human Rights in Africa

The HRIC has a well-established record of work with the African human rights system, particularly the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Commission) and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Court). It obtained observer status with the African Commission in April 2016. Working in collaboration with these institutions, as well as governments, national human rights institutions (NHRIs) and civil society organisations the HRIC aims to contribute through its research to a better understanding of the practices and procedures of the human rights system in Africa.

The HRIC’s projects and activities in relation to the African human rights system includes:

  • Research to comprehend the implementation of the decisions and judgments of the African Commission and Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (through the ESRC Human Rights Law Implementation Project and the project on Implementation of Human Rights Standards and the Robben Island Guidelines AHRC grant (PDF, 172kB))

  • Providing advice to and supporting the African Commission’s Special Mechanisms, in particular the Working Group on Communications in relation to implementation, and the Committee on the Prevention of Torture in Africa (CPTA).

  • Engaging with the African Commission, governments and civil society organisations with respect to prevention of torture.

  • Working with the Network of National Human Rights Institutions to deliver training and monitoring tools.

  • Regular attendance at the sessions of the African Commission;

  • Organising high-level seminars and workshops, involving members of the African Commission, African Court and other organisations and the Secretariat of the African Union.

  • Submission of amicus briefs to the African Commission and African Court.

  • Through the Article 5 Initiative supporting African institutions to improve domestic compliance with international law obligations, norms and procedures under the United Nations Convention against Torture (UNCAT) and the African Charter on Human and People's Rights.
