Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

The Jean Golding Institute supports data science for the benefit of our communities. Promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) is at the heart of our work, where we recognise our role in assisting collaboration across the various fields, personnel, and objectives of data scientists. Working to promote a spirit of positive progress and wellbeing is central to this role.

The Jean Golding Institute values diversity in peoples, cultures, experiences, ideas, and aspirations. By recognising the benefits that different perspectives bring, we nurture personal ambition, encourage collaborative research excellence and champion progressive policy across the university and wider society.

JGI policy and commitments:

  • To promote equality, fairness, and dignity to all our members and colleagues in the data science communities, and for each member to feel valued, listened to, empowered and respected.
  • To create a working environment free from bullying, harassment, victimisation and discrimination, and to provide confidential, safe communication channels through which concerns will be heard.
  • To continuously reflect on the meaning of diversity in our communities, to listen to all observations and feedback, and to react by discussing new ways to promote equality.
  • To work in alignment with the Equality Act 2010 which protects characteristics of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race (including colour, nationality, and ethnic or national origin), religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

JGI’s policy and commitments are fully supported by our staff, steering committee and governance board and conform to the University’s EDI policy and delivery plans.

Importantly, the JGI would like to promote ‘Stand up, Speak out’ initiative which acts as an umbrella for a range of tools to promote positive behaviours and to equip and empower staff to challenge all forms of unacceptable behaviour in the workplace.

The ‘JGI Code of Conduct’ sets our expectations and the behaviours that we encourage our community and all those that participate in any meeting/event/activity (virtual or physical) organised and/or delivered by the JGI. The JGI has set out an action plan (JGI EDI Action Plan (PDF, 149kB)) and this will be reviewed every year by our Steering Committee and Governance Board.
