Tom Shi, from Shanghai, China, is a graduate in Economics, Finance and Management.
After attending the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade, Tom studied international finance and trade at the University of Portsmouth. He choose Bristol for his Master’s because of its ‘academic and practical achievements, as well as the location of the city’.
‘Bristol is a great city - beautiful, friendly and convenient,’ he says. ‘People made me feel very welcome. I felt like a citizen of Bristol as well as a student at the University.’
After graduating, Tom took a job in a bank, and then co-founded two companies: a financial consulting firm and a private equity firm. Following that, he joined Evonik Degussa, where he was responsible for mergers and acquisitions in the greater China region. He recently joined Shanghai Pharmaceuticals Holding Company, where he is responsible for mergers and acquisitions, investment, capital market and international co-operation.
‘The research-intensive environment at Bristol greatly improved my analytical thinking skills, which are important for a career in finance,' he says. 'You also need good numerical ability and interpersonal and communicational skills. All of these characteristics were greatly enhanced by my time at Bristol.’
