Touring the aesthetic: liberal arts in Italy

This information relates to 2023. Any updates for 2024 will be made in late November. Spend a week exploring the aesthetic in Rome and Naples, guided by your University of Bristol lecturers.

Programme: study abroad summer programme with the University of Bristol
Dates: Monday 5 to Sunday 11 June 2023

Eligibility: 2nd, 3rd and 4th Liberal Arts students
Cost: accommodation, travel from Rome to Naples and entry to sites is covered for all students. You will need to pay for other costs including flights, food and airport transfers.

Programme details

This one week programme is an opportunity to come together with fellow Liberal Arts students and explore the art history, archaeology, theology, anthropology, film and literature that the rich cities of Rome and Naples have to offer.

The programme will include:

  • walking tour of Rome
  • visit to the Colosseum
  • visit to the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel
  • a "festival of research" at the British School of Rome
  • visit to Pompei
  • tour of Naples
  • and more!

You will also have some free time to explore.

The final itinerary will be confirmed in April.

Eligibility

There are 15 places on this programme.

To apply for one of these places, you must:

  • be a current undergraduate student on a Liberal Arts programme
  • be a cureent 2nd, 3rd or 4th year student

We will give priority to:

  • students in their 2nd year
  • students who are not on a course that includes a year abroad.

Language requirements

You do not need to speak  Italian to take part in this programme.

Academic requirements 

You do not need to meet any academic requirements to take part in this programme.

Costs

This programme is supported by funding from Santander Bank. The following costs will be organised and covered for all participants:

  • accommodation in shared rooms
  • train from Rome to Naples
  • entry to sites and museums included in the programme
  • two group dinners

You will need to organise and pay for all other costs, including:

  • return flights to and from Italy
  • visa (if required)
  • airport transfers
  • food
  • personal spending

Funding

Bursaries

Funding is available from Santander Bank.  There are 15 bursaries to help participants cover some of the cost of taking part.

There are two bursary amounts available: 

8 bursaries of £250 - all students are eligible to apply. 

7 bursaries £450 - to be eligible to apply, you must be a home student and meet at least one of the following criteria: 

  • you receive the University of Bristol BursaryAccess to Bristol Bursary or Bristol Scholars Bursary
  • you are care-experienced (this will need to be registered with Student Finance)
  • you are an estranged student (this will need to be registered with Student Finance)
  • you have caring responsibilities
  • you are a refugee or asylum seeker
  • you receive Universal Credit (note that you must be the recipient, not a partner or family member)
  • you are a mature student
  • you are a Black, Asian, or Minority Ethinic (BAME) student
  • you are a part-time student (this does not include supplementary years)
  • you have a disability or special educational need (this will need to be registered with Disability Services)
  • your home address is in an area of low progression to higher education (I.e your postcode is listed as Quintile '1' or '2' on the POLAR4 measure on the POLAR checking tool)

We will give priority to students meeting multiple criteria.
