Are you interested in developing video and other online material to use in your teaching?
The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry is pleased to announce a new partnership with JISC Digital Media. The aim of the partnership is to provide a range of digital media production services for undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and is available for free to teaching staff across the faculty.
JISC Digital Media helps the UK’s FE and HE communities embrace and maximise the use of digital media - and to achieve solutions that are innovative, practical and cost effective. JISC Digital Media is based at the University of Bristol in the Institute for Learning and Research Technology (ILRT).
The partnership will offer a range of services to faculty teaching staff, including the production of materials such as videos, audio podcasts and e-learning resources. JISC Digital Media are able to film on location, such as lecture theatres or teaching academies / outreach centres. It is available for free to teaching staff for undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. We will also offer advice to help you develop any ideas you may have.
Complete this project application form and send to email@example.com in the first instance. The form should give you an idea of what JISC Digital Media can offer and what will be required from the applicant.
Please note that we may not be able to accept all applications and all projects will need to fit into the time available within the partnership. The service is available to faculty staff at no charge for developing materials to support learning and teaching.
Three examples of recent projects undertaken by the partnership are available below.
We have been working closely with the Gloucestershire and Southmead clinical Academies in producing a series of clinical skills videos for the Hippocrates teaching website. JISC Digital Media and the Medical Education e-learning team have filmed the skills videos out on location at the Academies. To date, 10 videos have been produced. They are available via the Hippocrates teaching website.
We interviewed a group of 4th year medical students about their experiences of their 3rd year – the first clinical year of their medicine programme. We asked the students what they expected at the start of their third year and how this differed from the reality, and what advice they would offer to their peers starting year 3. The responses from the students were enlightening! The video is aimed at prospective students and current students about to start their first clinical placements. The video will launch as part of the forthcoming new Medical School website.
We produced an easily accessible learning resource for 3rd year medical students that will prepare them for the Primary Care OSCE station and encourage reflection on their history taking and consultation skills. Students can view a recording of a mock Primary Care OSCE station (featuring actors and teaching fellows), and then mark the candidate's performance using an interactive marksheet. They can then compare their marks with the average marks given my some primary care examiners. The tutorial is available to medical students via Blackboard.
