Cybersecurity for Food Security (CyFoo)

CyFoo studies the impact of malicious actors and vulnerabilities on the food supply.

CyFoo studies the impact of malicious actors and vulnerabilities on the food supply. The project aims to investigate vulnerabilities and their impact in order to develop a risk analysis framework and policy guidelines to support users in understanding and mitigating the cybersecurity risks from sensor-driven digital infrastructure (Agritech).

Agriculture is ever more reliant upon Agritech to optimise production processes. Such technology has shown great potential, leading to significant cost reduction and thereby profit increase. This means Agritech is highly disruptive in a sector with historically low profitability.

This project deploys Agritech field studies to investigate user understanding, perception, and behaviour towards risk. In particular, the project considers sensor-driven technology used for food production, such as precision agriculture (PA) and precision livestock farming (PLF). One focus is to analyse devices to study security vulnerabilities and their impact on food security and safety.

PETRAS Sector IoT Cybersecurity Animation Videos

The PETRAS National Centre of Excellence for IoT Systems Cybersecurity has released a series of animation videos on real-world scenarios posed by Internet of Things (IoT) cybersecurity for industry sectors, and how PETRAS research is tackling those challenges.

What are the security and privacy requirements emerging from interplay between humans, vehicles and infrastructure? How do we provide security and privacy assurances in supply chains and control systems? What are the privacy and security risks relating to healthcare and patient data, as well as the ethical challenges arising from using IoT technology?

These are some of the questions covered in this video series, where complex challenges posed by IoT cybsersecurity are presented in a concise and easily accessible format, through the lens of industry sectors - including Agritech.

Agritech

From self-driving tractors and indoor vertical farms to dairy herd management and temperature controlled polytunnels â€" IoT is an increasingly prominent and critical element of agriculture. As with all sectors, increased connectivity brings increased vulnerability, such as data leaks.

The Agritech animation video showcases PETRAS research projects that have explored the threats within this complex environment:

  • The CyFoo project established the first testbed to be focussed on the security of agritech devices. The project deployed field studies to investigate user understanding, perception, and behaviour towards risk.
