Investing in Engineering

We’re always working to ensure that our Faculty is at the cutting edge of teaching and research. Since September 2017 we’ve opened a multitude of new spaces to support hands-on teaching, learning and research. The £22 million+ investment includes a major new extension and refit. It provides state-of-the-art spaces and equipment as well as creating new places for students to socialise and study.

Flexible teaching spaces

A large flexible space to support active learning, seminars, design classes and group-working sessions. Can be used as one large space or divided up. The space is also used for conferences, open days and outreach.

Open-plan Engineering lab

A new flexible open-plan Engineering teaching laboratory for up to 200 in one group or multiple simultaneous classes and workshops. Increasing hands-on teaching and learning opportunities.

Fully-modernised electrical lab

Bigger and newly refurbished electrical teaching laboratory. Fully kitted out with state of the art equipment.

New student lounge

New light and spacious student space. Used for working, socialising, or just relaxing between lectures.

A co-working space designed with students to provide a space for hacking, making and crafting. The ethos of the space is one of experimentation and collaboration.

Propulsion Lab

A new state-of-the-art engines and propulsion laboratory combining traditional and green technologies.

Bookable student study rooms

Bookable student-only study space, social learning spaces and project rooms.

New café and entrance

A new café and computer lab. A remodelled entrance and 24-hour access student learning spaces.

Non-Destructive Testing laboratory

A fully-modernised Non-Destructive Testing laboratory and Faraday cage.

Satellite Lab and Ground station

The state-of-the-art satellite laboratory enables students to work on their own space missions by building and testing new satellites.

New national facility

Soil-Foundation-Structure Interaction (SoFSI) is a multi-disciplinary laboratory for large-scale infrastructure testing.
