Research

Engineering Mathematics is a research-intensive department, promoting the use of mathematics to study real-world problems of direct engineering, scientific and industrial relevance.

Staff in the department contribute to research across the University including artificial intelligence, machine learning, complexity, robotics, dynamics and control, environmental uncertainty, predictive life sciences, and neurosciences. They are involved in several interdisciplinary Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs), including the CDT in Neural Dynamics, the CDT in Communications, the Future Autonomous and Robotic Systems: FARSCOPE CDT.

The University of Bristol Engineering ranked 6th in Times Higher Education analysis of the Research Excellence Framework 2021, with 98% of our research recognised as world-leading or internationally excellent.
