Abstract: This paper discusses how some of the social learning opportunities of live computer lab sessions can be replicated through social media and peer mentor support. Over lockdown, changes were made to the Economic Data Analysis and Econometrics modules at the University of York. Computer lab sessions were replaced with asynchronous activities and pre-recorded videos, with lecturers using various institutional tools to promote social interactions. While students appreciated the ability to work at their own pace, engagement and peer interaction were limited with institutional tools. This led to a project funded by the Royal Economic Society to explore ways to stimulate a skills-based learning community through social media and peer support mentors. Students were recruited to run social media channels in support of the modules and to provide peer support. Data was collected through student surveys and focus groups with the students, the mentors and the lecturers. The paper discusses the findings of the project and offers suggestions for how to implement the ideas in a sustainable way. By taking into account their preferences for viewing shorter videos, using their own familiar social tools and having students as active partners, the paper argues that the department has moved closer to improving inclusion, diversifying participation opportunities and meeting student expectations.
