Higher doctorates are a higher tier of research doctorates which may be awarded:
- on the basis of a formally submitted substantial body of published original research of a very high standard, or
- on a honorary basis (honoris causa ie. "for the sake of honour") when a university wishes to recognise formally an individual's achievements and contributions to a particular field.
The Regulations for Higher Doctorates are presented in Annex 20 of the Regulations and Code of Reseach Degree Programmes.
